Logon to WebCT Vista via myCommNet
  • Go to my.commnet.edu and enter your NetID and
    password.
  • NetID BannerID_at_mxcc.commnet.edu
  • Example of NetID 09109109_at_mxcc.commnet.edu
  • Password 8-digit NetID password
  • Use the same password to access campus computers
    and remote e-mail (www.mail.commnet.edu).
  • If you have never logged on to a campus computer
    or access to your college email at
    www.mail.commnet.edu, you use your initial
    password.
  • Initial Password
  • 1st three letters of birth month with first
    letter capitalized
  • Ampersand character
  • Last 4 digits of SS
  • Example
  • John Brown was born April of 1968 and SS is
    045-84-9583.
  • His initial password is Apr9583
  • Change password
  • When you log on the first time, you will be
    prompted to change to a new password.
  • At least 8 characters in length
  • At least 3 of the 4 following criteria1. Upper
    case letters, 2. lower case letters, 3. numbers,
    or 4. special characters.

Best Performance in WebCT
  • Before you work in WebCT, there are a few things
    you need to do to ensure best performance in
    WebCT.
  • You need to disable all pop-up blockers in order
    to have WebCT window open.
  • Once you are in myCommNet, click WebCT Vista at
    upper right corner to access myWebCT page.
  • Close out myCommNet window. This is to avoid
    time-out messages from myCommNet when you work in
    WebCT.
  • Click Logout at the upper right corner of
    myCommNet window. Close myCommNet window by
    clicking X sign.
  • Click maximize icon in WebCT window to enlarge
    WebCT window.
  • To get out of WebCT, do not click X sign to close
    WebCT window. Click Logout (upper right) in WebCT
    window instead. If you click X sign in WebCT
    window, you may not be able to get back to WebCT
    via myCommNet unless you wait for a few hours.
  • To hide courses in MyWebCT page, click Edit
    (pencil) icon at the upper right corner of Course
    List column. Check the courses you dont want to
    display in myWebCT and click Hide button.

    submitted within a time frame.
  • Submission various files, web site (.zip)
  • Feedback instructor enters a grade, write
    comments, or attach a file with comments.
  • Examples
  • English Writing class submit a paper and the
    instructor sends the commented paper back.
  • Accounting class submit homework (Excel files).
  • Computer class submit homework (Word, Excel,
    Access, or web pages).

Create an Assignment
  • Add the Assignments Tool to Course Toolbar.
  • In Build Tab, click Assignments icon to bring it
    to the Course Toolbar.
  • Create an assignment.
  • In Build Tab, click the gray down arrow next to
    Assignments.
  • Select Go to Assignments tool
  • Click Create Assignments button.
  • Enter the Assignment title in Title box.
  • Enter the assignment descriptions in Instruction
    box.
  • Check All Students Individually

Assignment Settings
  • Choose the due date.
  • Choose the cutoff date when you no longer allow
    submission.
  • Check Allow the assignment to be graded. Enter
    the max score.
  • Click Save.
  • The assignment column is automatically added to
    the grade book.

Student View-Submit an Assignment
  • In Student Tab, click More Tools and select
    Assignments.
  • Click the assignment title (Assingment1)
  • Type information in the submission box.
  • To attach the homework file, click Add
    Attachments.
  • In the left window, Select Basic View, click My
    Computer icon.
  • Locate the file from your computer and
    double-click the file.
  • Click Submit button.

Grade an Assignment
  • In Teach tab
  • Click More Tools and select Assignments.
  • Select the assignment you need to grade and click
    the green arrow to display the assignment
    submissions.
  • In Submitted tab, click the assignment title
    (assignment1) next to a student name.

Grade an Assignment
  • View the submitted file
  • Click the student file.
  • Click Save to save the file to your computer.
  • View the file and add your comments.
  • You may open the file with MS Word, open the
    student assignment file, write comments in the
    file, and save it. Then send the file back to the
    student.
  • Send the file with your comments back.
  • Click Add Attachments button to attach the file.
  • Click Basic View, click My Computer, locate the
    file with your comments and double-click on it.
  • If My Computer is not displayed, click Upload
    Files, click Browse. Locate the file from your
    computer. Click Add Selected.

Grade an Assignment
  • Check Return graded submission to Student (s)
    with the following grade. Enter the grade.
  • If you check this, your student view will not see
    Add Attachment button.
  • If you are not satisfied with your student work
    and would like him/her to make changes and
    resubmit the work, you need to check Return to
    Student (s) for further editing. With this
    selected, your student view will have Add
    Attachment button to submit the file again.

Release the Assignment Grade Column
  • Once an assignment is created, the assignment
    column is added to the grade book. However, as
    default, the column is hidden from students.
  • After you have graded the assignment, you need to
    release the assignment column to students.
  • In Teach Tab, click Grade Book.
  • Click Column Settings button at the upper right
    corner.
  • In Release to Student row, under the assignment
    column, click No. The No changes to Yes.

Student View-Assignment Result
  • Your comments and grade of a graded assignment
    can be viewed by your students.
  • From Student view, click More Tools.
  • Click Graded tab.
  • Click the assignment title.
  • The comment and attached file will be displayed.
  • Click the file the instructor attached and click
    open to view the file with comments.
  • Click OK to get out of the assignment result
    page.

Assignments vs. Email or Learning Module
  • Assignments
  • Assignments module allows students to submit
    their homework within a time frame.
  • Email
  • Email allows students to submit their homework at
    anytime without time limit.
  • Learning Module
  • Post assignment files. But students cannot submit
    their work in Learning Module. They either use
    email attachment or attach a file in Assignments.
