Presentation Problems
  • Once upon a time when I was younger, I made some
serious errors when I made presentations -
because I failed to take my audience into
account. On one occasion, I failed to hear
properly the name of the place from where my
audience came. I referred to it several times in
my talk as Bangladesh afterwards they told me
politely that they came from Andhra Pradesh in
    India.
  • On another occasion I planned a science activity
based on traditional English stories, one of
which had the title The Three Pigs. I hadnt
taken into consideration that my audience were
    Muslims

Presentation solutions
  • Once upon a time I worked at the University
training students to teach science. Sometimes,
after they had all carried out experiments I
would ask groups of students to present their
findings in interesting ways. The students were
very resourceful. Sometimes a group wrote a song
(or a poem) about their experiment, and sang (or
recited) it to the class. Sometimes they
presented their experiment like a play or TV
commercial. Everyone had fun, the scientific
content was remembered and the presenters had the
    attention of the whole class.

14
PresentationsUnderstanding
  • Help the audience to understand your
  • presentation by
  • Keeping it simple avoiding unnecessary material
  • Building on what the audience knows
  • Using a logical structure making this explicit
  • Using stories, anecdotes, analogies and imagery
  • Appealing to all learning styles
  • Using graphs, diagrams and charts
  • Using colour, illustrations, video or audio clips
  • Avoiding using too many slides
  • Avoiding too much text on a slide

15
PresentationsPositive feelings
  • Make the audience feel good by
  • Considering their reactions
  • Treating the audience as your equals
  • Asking questions
  • Valuing their contributions
  • Using humour
