The main idea of the story is Bud finding his
Dad.
  • Bud keeps flyers that his mom gave him thinking
    that they had something to do with his dad.
  • Bud gets mad when any one touches his flyers.
  • Bud travels all the way to Grand Rapids from
    Flint with Lefty Lewis.
  • Bud lied to Lefty Lewis about knowing his dad.
  • He called Herman E. Calloway his dad.
  • At the end he found out that Herman E. Calloway
    was his grandfather.

The Theme
  • One lesson that you can learn is to never to
    trust flyers that someone gives you. Another
    thing is to always stay with the person that is
    taking care of you because if you dont you might
    get in trouble and to young to fix it.

Plot
  • Bud was sent to live with the Amos.
  • Bud was locked in the shed.
  • Bud ran away from the Amos.
  • Bud went to the library.
  • Bud started walking to Grand Rapids.
  • Lefty Lewis picked Bud up off the streets.
  • Lefty Lewis drop off Bud at Herman E. Calloways.

Setting
  • One place the story took place was at Herman E.
    Calloways house. In the house there were a lot
    of old things. Bud stayed in his moms room.
    Where he hung a picture if a horses because she
    had a whole wall full of them.

Characters
  • Bud, the main character is brave, smart and
    funny. Bud has brown hair, blue eyes and is
    African American. In the story bud is trying to
    find his father. To do so he uses flyers his mom
    gave him before she died. Then he finds out that
    the flyers are of his grandfathers band.
  • Herman E. Calloway, Buds grandfather is bold
    and doesnt show his feelings well. He has brown
    hair, is big boned, and is African American. In
    the story when he first meets bud he is not very
    nice to him. He wont even eat with him. When
    he finds out Bud is his grand son he freaks out
    because that means hes his daughters son.
  • Lefty Lewis, the man who took Bud to Grand Rapids
    a funny man. He has brown hair and is African
    American. In the story he is so nice to Bud that
    his let Bud come with him to Grand Rapids. Lefty
    is a labor organizer.

    a telegram to the log cabin. He still owns the
    club, doesnt he? something that comes to
    you in the mail.
  • Hoodlum- a bad child They even said I was a
    hoodlum. Thug, one who commits acts of violence
  • kin- joking The way he was so worried about
    me stealing stuff from him before he even knew if
    I was honest or not made wonder if someone who
    was so suspicious could ever be kin to me. A
    group of persons of common ancestry
  • Hypnotizing- making you drowsy Then I could
    sniff the paper, that soft, powdery, drowsy smell
    that comes off the pages in little puffs when
    youre reading something or looking at some
    pictures, a kind of hypnotizing smell. to
    dazzle or overcome by or as if by suggestion
