Micronutrient Initiative Project Gujarat

What are Micronutrients ?
  • The nutrients which are required by the body in
very small amounts but on regular basis are
    termed as Micronutrients.
  • E.g. Vitamins Minerals

3
These nutrients play a vital role in the
regulation of the metabolic activity in the body
and in formation of body structure and
skeleton. These nutrients are to be made
available regularly through food. Diet devoid of
vegetables fruits do not provide these to the
body thus causing various deficiency
disorders.
4
Among all the essential micronutrients, the
deficiency of Vitamin A, Iodine and Iron have
caused serious public health concern in India.
5
Vitamin- A Deficiency (VAD) is the most common
cause of preventable blindness in children
leads to an increased risk of morbidity
mortality.
6
Iodine deficiency impairs growth, development
intellectual capacity. Iodine Deficiency
Disorders (IDD) is the main cause for cretinism
in children.
7
Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) is responsible for
premature delivery, low birth weight baby
maternal mortality. It affects peoples working
capacity learning ability in children.
8
  • All the above disorders (VAD, IDD IDA) can be
easily overcome by consuming a diet rich in
  • Fruits
  • GLVs
  • Other vegetables
  • Daily portions of cereals and pulses.

9
  • Another way to overcome the above deficiencies is
    by
  • Consuming food that is fortified with these
    nutrients.
  • MI is involved in fortification supplementation
    programmes for the needy.
