Early Initiation of breastfeeding
  • Place the newborn on mothers chest and abdomen
    for skin-to- skin contact Keeps newborn warm
  • Early initiation within half an hour
  • Stimulates breast milk production
  • Colostrums is infants first vaccine
  • Fosters bonding between mother and newborn

NO Prelacteal Feeds
  • Water, sugar solution, solution of Jaggery
    Gripewater, Bonnison, Somva,Vitamins, tonics or
    other types of milk should not be given.
  • Prelacteal feeds give no advantage to healthy
    child and there is no loss if they are not given

Exclusive Breastfeeding
  • Exclusive Breastfeeding means , to give only
    breast-milk, not even wateror any prelacteal to
    baby for the first six months.
  • Water or other prelacteal feeds replaces
    breastfeed.
  • Breast milk provides all nutrients in correct
    amount to satisfy hunger and thirst of infant up
    to 6 months of age.
  • Exclusive breastfeeding results in less number of
    diarrhea.
  • Prolongs amenorrhea - fertility control.
  • It must be remembered that benefits of
    breastfeeding are reduced if it is not exclusive
    breastfeeding.

Frequency of breastfeeding
  • On demand- as often as the infant wants .
  • Usually a gap of 2-3 hours but the duration must
    be decided by the baby.
  • Frequent breastfeeding stimulates milk
    production and prevents breast engorgement.
  • Breast milk quickly and easily digested by the
    baby.

Use of Both Breasts
  • Continue breast feeding from one breast till the
    baby release the breast.
  • Baby should not be taken off from the breast
    HIND Milk.
  • Offer the second breast let the baby decide
  • Never use bottle or pacifiers.

Breastfeeding Sick mother or Baby
  • Continue breast feeding breast milk protects
    against illness
  • Feed more time for recovery of the baby

Breastfeeding and Working women
  • Use Expressed breast milk
  • Expressed breast milk can be stored for 8 hours
    at room temperature in a cool place and 72 hours
    in refrigerator
  • Use cup and spoon
  • Wet nursing

Complementary Feeding
  • After completion of sixth month of age ,
    breastfeed must be supplemented by complementary
    feeding.
  • Staple cereal of the family should be used.
  • Porridge can be made with suji,broken
    wheat,ground rice,ragi, millets etc.
  • Adding sugar or jaggery and ghee or oil to
    increase energy value.

  • Consistancy should be thick.
  • Vegetables and mashed fruits (not juices).
  • Protective foods Milk, curd, lassi, egg
  • Amylase rich (Malted) foods

Continued breastfeeding
  • Breastfeeding should be continued till 2 years or
    more.
  • Active feeding or adopting caring attitude
    towards child while feeding stimulates appetite
    and development.
