Title: Preparation of the IA proposals within FP7 Working groupNovel Accelerating Systems

1
Preparation of the IA proposals within
FP7 Working groupNovel Accelerating Systems
  • Erk Jensen (CERN) for the working group
  • Brigitte Cros (LPGP, U Paris Sud), Gilbert
    Guignard (CERN), Alban Mosnier (CEA/Dapnia),
    Vittorio Palladino (INFN Napoli), François
    Richard (LAL/IN2P3)

2
A brief history
  • At CARE06
  • Idea IA Novel Acceleration Systems (NAS, one
    of 3 planned IAs),
  • Consisting of 10 JRAs,
  • Based on Letters of Intent received by ESGARD
  • Total cost then estimated to 83 M
  • Dec. 06 after 1st round of concentration/de-scopi
    ng/merging
  • Total cost estimate reduced to 55 M
  • Jan. 07 CLIC new parameters announced
  • Total cost estimate 48 M
  • Proposed to define MICE as TA
  • Remaining 8 JRAs, 2 TA (MICE CTF3)
  • June 3 IAs to be joined into 1!
  • Reduction requested to total cost of lt30 M (!),
we request guidelines from ESGARD. At the same
    time
  • ILC GDE Europe come with additional requests (DR,
BDS, positron source, low emittance beam
    transport instrumentation)

3
A brief history (contd.)
  • July 23rd 07 extended ESGARD meeting with
    directors, guidelines
  • Prepare for one IA only,
  • Define activities Core (15 M) and Additional
    (lt 8 M),
  • Assume ratio contributed/requested budget of 2/1,
  • Use the Strategy Document to define priorities.
  • Consider to
  • Expatriate Laptech to Laserlab II
  • Postpone Posipol to a later call!
  • End of July I asked the potential collaborators
for detailed feedback, in particular concerning
commitments for the matching funds. The received
    feedback showed
  • A huge interest to collaborate,
  • that the labs are ready to commit money (a lot!),
  • that this is not a way to reduce the overall
budget volume (back up to gt50 M)!

4
A brief history (contd.)
  • Sept. 07 ESGARD OMIA Priorities from
    ILC/GDE-Europe and CLIC received,
  • Oct. 15th 2nd extended ESGARD meeting with
directors, presented core and additional as
    requested. Outcome of the meeting
  • Retain core only,
  • Assume 70k/FTEy throughout,
  • Assume ceiling of 15 M for EU contribution
    (strict!)
  • Further reductions (after Oct. 15th)
  • Reduce by 10 to reserve budgets for NAs and
    TAs
  • Reduce (by about 3) to include crab-waist
    proposal
  • As a result, we had to implement further
    reductions, and
  • I have to apologize that I had no time to inform
the concerned parties about these rapid and
    drastic changes!

5
The reductions of October (EU part only)
Proposal presently under discussion!
6
In the following, I will present this present
proposal under discussion!
Preliminary!
  • 9 work-packages remain
  • NC high gradient, Stabilisation, BDS, Drive beam
phase, Beam Dumps, DR Vacuum, DR SC wiggler,
    FFAG, Positron source
  • Of these, I assume that
  • FFAG will be in the new JRA ANAC,
  • the others will be joined in the JRA NCLinac,
    which I will concentrate on.
  • Should DR SC wiggler be joined with other SC
magnets? In the following, I assume this also.
  • I again ask your understanding, but we seem to be
aiming at a quickly moving target!
  • I also assume that EC contribution is 30 of
    total.

7
NCLinac, distribution by WPs
Preliminary!
8
NCLinac, distribution by labs
Preliminary!
9
NCLinac, by labs and WPs
Preliminary!
10
NCLinac, WP1 Normal-Conducting High-Gradient
research
Preliminary!
  • Building on the success of CTF3 and complementing
it,the goal of WP1 is to optimize CTF3 and its
    use towards
  • cost- and performance optimized accelerating
    structures and
  • their integration in CLIC modules. This also
    requires
  • better modelling of breakdown and
  • better suppression of HOMs,
  • experimental verification
  • Partners CIEMAT, Cockcroft/Manchester,
    HIP/Helsinki, Uni Uppsala, (CERN)
  • Estimated total 2.8 M
  • This WP is complementary to the module
implementation which is financed 100 by CERN
and not part of this proposal.

Atomic level simulations
CLIC module

  • Consider Linear Collider environment some
elements will be inside the detector, consider
    accelerator typical noise (magnetic field,
coolant flow, radiation ), assure compatibility
    with other installations.

Summary
  • From the initial ideas (IA NAS) until now, this
has been a difficult and painful process and
  • it isnt over but we must proceed fast
  • Next deadline deliverables, milestones, schedule
    and 1st level WBS 21st Oct. 2007!
  • Part of what I presented is in discussion and
preliminary, but I needed to provoke your
    reaction!
  • My apologies again I wasnt able to keep you
informed about these recent, rapid changes!
  • Thank you!
