1
STFC - RAL Applied Science Division NED
Programme Review and Proposals for Future
Involvement
  • Summarise RAL Programmes and Involvement
  • Past
  • Current
  • Future directions and bids

2
NED I EU Integrated Activity FP6
  • RAL programme, total 424 kEu, RAL 364kEu, FP6 60
    kEu
  • RAL WP involvement
  • Responsible for coordinating the IDI Work package
  • Conventional Insulation Development at RAL
  • Innovative Insulation at CEA
  • Magnet design
  • Magnetic
  • Mechanical

3
NED I Insulation Development
  • Development of the Insulation Specification
    EDMS548037
  • Conventional Insulation Development
  • Basic materials evaluation
  • Glass sizing studies led to the development of
a commercial tape with polyimide size with JPS
    Glass.
  • The tape material is robust for cable taping and
    coil winding
  • Laminates show good electrical and mechanical
properties after heat treatment and impregnation
  • Development of test samples and characterisation
    techniques
  • Short Beam Shear and Work of fracture
  • See final IDI report by Simon Canfer EDMS 815074

NED I Magnet Design
  • Magnetic Design
  • Optimisation of the Cosine theta geometry as part
    of the MDO Group
  • Use of Optimisation routines developed by Vector
    Fields
  • Evaluation of the Helical winding configuration
for a NED type magnet - Paper to MT20
  • Mechanical Design
  • Mechanical modelling of 15T 88mm Cosine theta
    dipole
  • Development of ANSYS model covering
  • Collaring, yoking, cooldown and powering
  • Objective to keep the compressive stress at the
    mid plane lt150MPa

5
NED I.5 current programme
  • STFC Strategic Initiatives Programme within the
    NED Collaboration
  • Funded 100 by STFC, 526k overall (750kEu)
  • Duration 36months Jan 07 Dec 09
  • RAL WP responsibilities/commitments
  • Generic RD for high field magnets
  • Ongoing Conventional Insulation development
  • Mechanical design of 15T magnet
  • Short Model Coils (SMC) Racetrack coils
    reviewed yesterday
  • Magnetic design
  • Insulation development, specification and
    procurement
  • Manufacture of racetrack coils

6
NED I.5 current programme
  • Generic RD - Ongoing Conventional Insulation
    development and application
  • NED I - about basic insulation materials
    development and characterisation
  • Main emphasis on laminates properties of the
    insulation
  • NED I.5 Behaviour of the insulation in a coil
    matrix with the cable
  • Emphasis now on cable stacks to see the
    interactive effects
  • Real application of the insulation system in the
    racetrack SMC coils
  • Still want to pursue the opportunities for basic
    RD
  • Improvement of the matrix properties which may
ultimately be important for magnet performance
  • Radiation hardness cyanate esters
  • Matrix toughness nano-clays, dendritic
    inclusions
  • Silanes to improve bonding to the cable
  • Study of Radiation effects

7
NED I.5 current programme
  • Time to Review this programme
  • Relate to Cern HFM programme and EU FP7 IA HFM
  • Main focus to date has been on the SMC programme
  • Now starting to manufacture parts and coils
  • Expect this to run to Autumn 2008
  • Now propose to concentrate again on insulation
    development
  • Mechanical properties of the coil matrix through
    stack studies
  • Improvement of the epoxy matrix properties
  • Radiation hardness studies
  • Mechanical Modelling assessing the future
    direction of this work
  • Complete studies on the 88mm 15T
  • Look at 110mm 13T designs cosine theta and
    alternatives

8
Programmes - future
  • IA HIGH FIELD MAGNET (HFM) RD - NEDII
  • RAL ASD proposed WP involvement
  • WP2 Support studies - Insulation radiation hard
    materials and epoxies
  • WP36 Magnet design magnetic and mechanical
  • WP5 Corrector magnet Nb3Sn design and
    manufacture

9
Programmes - future
  • IA HFM RD NEDII proposed RAL input areas
  • WP2 Support Studies
  • Insulation and Radiation Hardness studies
  • Tasks conventional and innovative insulation
improved impregnation in terms of radiation and
    strength
  • Specification mechanical electrical
    radiation
  • Characterisation techniques for the coil matrix
  • Test programme definition and certification of an
    insulation system
  • Test programme execution and management
  • Links of this programme to mechanical studies
    through measurement and characterisation of
winding packs modulus thermal contraction etc
  • Develop synergy of rad hard materials work to
other programmes such as targets unique links
between materials and the engineering design in
    RAL ASD
  • Infrastructure for rad hard studies sources
    handling testing facilities

10
Programmes - future
  • IA HFM RD NEDII proposed RAL input areas
  • WP3 and WP6 Dipole or Quadrupole models and
    prototype
  • Magnet apertures will be large gt100mm and fields
    high 13T
  • Alternative magnet designs to be studied and
    evaluated
  • Main input should be as mechanical modelling for
the design phases building on the work from NEDI
    and the SIP(NEDI.5) programme
  • This mechanical modelling should be closely
    linked to the materials programme
  • Also the development of test assemblies to
confirm materials behaviour and model predictions
    sub-modelling

11
Programmes - future
  • IA HFM RD NEDII proposed RAL input areas
  • WP5 Nb3Sn correctors
  • The experience gained in the CNI FP7 programme
for qpole correctors would put RAL a strong
position to lead the Nb3Sn corrector package when
combined with the experience gained in the
manufacture of Nb3Sn racetracks under the SMC
    programme
  • The magnets are at the scale where we could take
on the design and manufacture and testing of
    prototype coils

12
Programmes - future
  • IA HFM RD NEDII proposed RAL input areas
  • Summary
  • Proposed Programme
  • Staff 9sy
  • Recurrent 400kEu
  • Duration 4 years
  • Note this is the proposal made to RAL management
    and to Cern
