Sobering Thought
  • Figures from 2005/06 showed that of the 28
    individuals who died in or following police
    contact, 2 were detained under Section 136 of the
    Mental Health Act 1983 and 4 had some form of
    mental health needs
  • An IPCC study estimated 11,500 people detained
    under 136 in 2005/6 for 10 hours on average
  • 11 of 24 shootings by the police between 1998
    2001 involved someone with mental health needs (4
    times more likely to be killed by police)
