Where are the Immigrants coming from?
Before 1885 immigrants came mostly from Northern
and Western Europe. After 1885 immigrants came
mostly from Southern and Eastern parts of Europe.
Countries include Italy, Poland, Greece,
Russia, Hungary, China, Japan, Korea, India,
Philippines

Why did millions of immigrants decide to make the
difficult journey to the United States?
  • Push Factors- Conditions that drive people from
    their homes.
  • Pogroms- organized attacks on Jewish communities
    in Russia

immigration?
  • Nativists sought to limit immigration preserve
    the country for native born white Protestants.
  • They argued new immigrants wouldnt fit into U.S.
    culture as they were too different or took low
    paying jobs.

  • Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882 was an act that
    barred Chinese Laborers from entering the
    country. This action was an example of the
    nativist feeling in the United States.
