Title: Isaiah 53 The Suffering Servant

1
(No Transcript)
2
(Acts 832-33) He was led as a sheep to
slaughter and as a lamb before its shearer is
silent, so He does not open His mouth. In
humiliation His judgment was taken away who
shall relate His generation for His life is
removed from the earth.
Of whom does the prophet say this?
3
Jesus said, I am the one
  • (Luke 2425-26) And He said to them, O foolish
men and slow of heart to believe in all that the
prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary for
the Christ to suffer these things and to enter
    into His glory?

4
Jesus said, I am the one
(Luke 2444-47) Then He said to them, These are
the words which I spoke to you while I was still
with you, that all things must be fulfilled which
were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets
and the Psalms concerning Me. And He opened
their understanding, that they might comprehend
the Scriptures. Then He said to them, Thus it is
written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ
to suffer and to rise from the dead the third
day, and that repentance and remission of sins
should be preached in His name to all nations,
beginning at Jerusalem.

The Servants Rejection
Isaiah 531-3
8
The Servants Rejection
  • The fact of the Messiah's rejection
  • (Isaiah 531) Who has believed our message? And
to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
  • (John 1237-38) But though He had performed so
many signs before them, yet they were not
believing in Him that the word of Isaiah the
prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke,
Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom
has the arm of the Lord been revealed?

9
The Servants Rejection
  • The cause of the Messiah's rejection
  • (Isaiah 532) For He grew up before Him like a
tender shoot, and like a root out of parched
ground He has no stately form or majesty that we
should look upon Him, nor appearance that we
    should be attracted to Him.
  • (Mark 63) Is this not the carpenter, the Son of
Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and
Simon? And are not His sisters here with us? So
    they were offended at Him.

10
The Servants Rejection
  • The results of the Messiah's rejection
  • (Isaiah 533) He was despised and forsaken of
men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief
and like one from whom men hide their face, He
was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

11
The Servants Suffering
Isaiah 534-6
12
The Servants Suffering
  • (Isaiah 534-6) Surely our griefs He Himself
bore, and our sorrows He carried yet we
ourselves esteemed Him stricken, smitten of God,
and afflicted. But He was pierced through for
our transgressions, He was crushed for our
iniquities the chastening for our well-being
fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are
healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray,
each of us has turned to his own way but the
Lord has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on
    Him.

13
The Servants Suffering
  • Severe
  • Undeserved
  • Misinterpreted
  • Vicarious
  • (1 Peter 222) who committed no sin, nor was
any deceit found in His mouth

14
The Servants Submission
Isaiah 537
15
The Servants Submission
  • (Isaiah 537) He was oppressed and He was
afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth like a
lamb that is led to slaughter, and like a sheep
that is silent before its shearers, so He did not
    open His mouth.
  • (1 Peter 222-23) and while being reviled, He
did not revile in return while suffering, He
uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself
    to Him who judges righteously

16
The Ultimate Question
  • (Isaiah 538) and as for His generation, who
considered that He was cut off out of the land of
the living, for the transgression of my people to
    whom the stroke was due?

17
Who considered?
  • (Romans 1016) However, they did not all heed
the glad tidings for Isaiah says, Lord, who has
    believed our report?

18
The Servants Vindication
Isaiah 539-11
19
The Servants Vindication
  • Honor shown Him in His burial
  • (Isaiah 539) His grave was assigned with wicked
men, yet He was with a rich man in His death,
because He had done no violence, nor was there
    any deceit in His mouth.

20
The Servants Vindication
  • Honor shown Him in His burial
  • (Mt. 2757-60) And when it was evening, there
came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who
himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. This
man went to Pilate and asked for the body of
Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given over to
him. And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a
clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new
tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock and he
rolled a large stone against the entrance of the
    tomb and went away.

21
The Servants Vindication
  • His Resurrection from the dead
  • (Isaiah 5310) But the Lord was pleased to crush
Him, putting Him to grief if He would render
Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His
offspring, He will prolong His days, and the good
pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.

22
By His resurrection Jesus
  • (Isaiah 5310) He will see His offspring, He will
prolong His days, and the good pleasure of the
Lord will prosper in His hand.
  • Saw His offspring
  • (Heb. 213) Behold, I and the children whom God
    has given Me.

23
By His resurrection Jesus
  • (Isaiah 5310) He will see His offspring, He will
prolong His days, and the good pleasure of the
Lord will prosper in His hand.
  • Prolonged His days
  • (Hebrews 725) Hence, also, He is able to save
forever those who draw near to God through Him,
since He always lives to make intercession for
    them.

24
By His resurrection Jesus
  • (Isaiah 5310) He will see His offspring, He will
prolong His days, and the good pleasure of the
Lord will prosper in His hand.
  • Accomplished the good pleasure of the Lord
  • (Col. 119-20) For it was the Fathers good
pleasure for all the fulness to dwell in Him, and
through Him to reconcile all things to Himself,
having made peace through the blood of His cross

25
The Servants Vindication
  • His role as Redeemer and Lord
  • (Isaiah 5311) As a result of the anguish of His
soul, He will see it and be satisfied by His
knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will
justify the many, as He will bear their
    iniquities.
  • (Roman 323-25) for all have sinned and fall
short of the glory of God, being justified freely
by His grace through the redemption that is in
Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a
propitiation by His blood, through faith

26
The ServantsExalted Reign
Isaiah 5312 5213-15
27
The ServantsExalted Reign
  • His exaltation
  • (Isaiah 5312) Therefore, I will allot Him a
portion with the great, and He will divide the
booty with the strong because He poured out
Himself to death, and was numbered with the
transgressors yet He Himself bore the sin of
many, and interceded for the transgressors.

28
Jesus said, I am the one
  • (Luke 2236-37) And He said to them, But now,
let him who has a purse take it along, likewise
also a bag, and let him who has no sword sell his
robe and buy one. For I tell you, that this which
is written must be fulfilled in Me, And He was
numbered with transgressors for that which
refers to Me has its fulfillment.

29
The ServantsExalted Reign
  • His exaltation
  • (Isaiah 5213-15) Behold, My servant will
prosper, He will be high and lifted up, and
greatly exalted. Just as many were astonished at
you, My people, (so His appearance was marred
more than any man, and His form more than the
sons of men), thus He will sprinkle many nations.
Kings will shut their mouths on account of Him
for what had not been told them they will see,
and what they had not heard they will understand.

30
Three Glorious Truths
  • The Servants sacrificial death shed the blood
    that now sprinkles the nations.
  • Even kings will bow down to the crucified one!
  • Those known for their wisdom will shut their
mouths at the opportunity to learn from Him.

31
The ServantsExalted Reign
  • His exaltation
  • (Phil. 29-11) Therefore also God highly exalted
Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above
every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee
should bow, of those who are in heaven, and on
earth, and under the earth, and that every tongue
should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the
    glory of God the Father.

32
The apostles said, He is the one...
  • (Acts 326) For you first, God raised up His
Servant, and sent Him to bless you by turning
every one of you from your wicked ways.

33
Three important things to remember
  • The apologetic value of Isaiah 53.
  • The glory of the Lord Jesus Christ!
  • Our path to glory is also through suffering.
