Nano Paint
  • By Elaine Ko, Nicole Garner and Jenny Branstad

3
Qualities of Nanopaint
  • Three times more resistant to scratching and
    chipping.
  • Retains brighter, glossier, better looking color
    for longer
  • Less microscopic chips and dents cause the paint
    to have improved gloss
  • Resistance to weathering keeps the paint form
    becoming dull

4
Chemical Characteristics
  • Nanopaints strong and dense bonding network
makes it glossier and less chip resistant than
regular paint with long polymer bonding.
  • Different nano-additives to the paint can give
the paint different characteristics, for example
    diamonds

5
Diamonds
  • Nano-diamonds are a good additive to paint
because diamonds are the hardest known
materials, and are chemically resistant to
aggressive medias such as acids and alkaline
    solutions.

6
And When Added
  • The added hardness decreases scratches and impact
    marks in the paint.
  • Because it is more chemically inert the paint
fades slower and undesirable spots and marks of
    corrosion are avoided.
  • When matt paints experience impacts, friction,
and scratching they often form 'shiny spots'.
Yet, these shiny spots are reduced by over 100
with the use of nano diamonds which allow matt
finishes to be able to be guaranteed for a longer
    time period.

7
How it is Done
  • Paint applied by machines to car in four stages -
zinc phosphate coating, filler, base coat,
    transparent clear lacquer containing nano
material (in Mercedes-Benz cars nano sized
    ceramic pieces).
  • Car frame is baked in an oven at 140 C
  • While being baked, the ceramic particles
crosslink to create a dense network solid

8
Recent Development Liquid Solid
  • Ultraviolet light cures it in 3 seconds, cheaper
    alternative
  • Does not give off hazardous fumes
  • 100 of molecules pigment/filler as opposed to
    20-30 in other paint
  • Can also be used in flexible screens,
    heat-resistance, and waterproofing

9
Formation of Coating
  • molecules have photo inhibitor, UV light hits it
and the light knockselectrons loose from
    molecules
  • In agitated state, individual moleculesbind to
each other creating a uniform coating

10
Uses
  • Cars- Mercedes-Benz is manufacturing new cars
with the use of nano paint, people can get their
cars specially painted with nano technology at
    specialized places.
  • Navy- Painting ships and machinery.
  • Houses
  • Industrial buildings
  • Jenni hopes that it will create long-lasting,
    high-gloss, low-chip nail polish--Maybe we were
born with it, Maybe its Maybelline

The Future
  • U.S. army is developing paint with nanobots that
detect and heal cracks and corrosion insuring a
    longer life and greater strength
  • Trying to make paints able to self-correct due to
    changing circumstances
  • Also paint should be able to
  • Convert solar to electric power through nano
sized solar sheet particles, electro-shock insect
pest control, user configurable display screens,
electrical power distribution, air cleaning by
active molecular transport, and sound dampening
or production.   Can be used interior or
    exterior.
