The Volt (V)

• Electromotive Force (e.m.f.)
• The electrical force of a cell or battery is
  called its electromotive force (e.m.f.). This
  force which makes electrons (very small
  particles) flow around a circuit is measured in
  units called volts (V).
• Each kind of a cell has a particular e.m.f.. A
  dry cell, for example, has an e.m.f. of 1.5 volts.

What would happen to the brightness of bulbs in a
series circuit if we were to increase the voltage
of the batteries?

  the Voltaic pile.
• The volt, the unit for electromotive force, is
  named after him.
