Title: Learning from Mistakes

1
Learning from Mistakes
  • A different way of learning

2
What is Learning from Mistakes?
  • A way of testing the depth of understanding
    achieved by students.
  • A fun method of getting information about usually
    boring subjects across.
  • A last resort for a lecturer who had tried
    everything!

3
How it evolved
  • Initially applied to CAD drawings then to
    standard BS 8888 technical drawings.
  • The drawings were produced with mistakes on them
and labelled as the lecturers own work.
  • Students were asked to mark the mistakes and note
    what was wrong.
  • Then they were told not to make the same mistakes
    themselves in their work.

4
Why use this idea?
  • The same mistakes re-occurred annually .
  • Telling students how to draw to standard did not
    always work.
  • Practicing their own drawings, with feedback from
    lecturer was not always successful.
  • Students really like to find fault with a
    lecturers work.
  • It is a totally different and a fun way of
    assessing knowledge

5
When can this be used?
  • As a formative, but fun, session.
  • When students have already had feedback and need
    reinforcement of theories.
  • To assist learning in problem areas.
  • To give detailed information in a format which
will help the student to produce better work.

What next?A mini project.
  • There are plans to expand this idea into other
areas of Engineering where there is a history of
    recurring student difficulties.
  • Thermo-fluids
  • Mechanics
  • Communication
