    after he wrote "To Autumn."

    air. A temperate sharpness about it. Really,
    without joking, chaste weather -- Dian skies -- I
    never lik'd stubble-fields so much as now -- Aye
    better than the chilly green of the Spring.
    Somehow a stubble plain looks warm -- in the same
    way that some pictures look warm -- This struck
    me so much in my Sunday's walk that I composed
    upon it.

Bright Star In Context (1)
  • The poem was written by Keats in 1819 and revised
    it in 1820, perhaps on the (final) voyage to
    Italy (a common treatment for tuberculosis, a
    trip to Italy).
  • Keats was aware that he was dying. Some critics
    have theorized that this poem was addressed to
    his fiance, Fanny Brawne, and connect the poem to
    his May 3, 1818 letter to her.
