11
A few of the main benefits in more detail
  • To increase fitness
  • Exercise, training and taking part in sport can
increase fitness. A weight training programme
combined with taking part in a sport can ensure
that muscles can be strengthened and made more
flexible, becoming more toned in the process.
  • Exercising obviously expends energy which uses up
calories. This can contribute to a weight loss
    programme.

12
2. To help the individual feel good
  • Exercise produces a hormone called serotonin
which is often termed the feel good hormone
thus exercise is also good for the mind.
  • Exercising regularly can help keep the body in
shape and helps people look better this can in
turn improve confidence and self esteem. These
could also be increased after overcoming a
    difficult physical challenge.

13
3. To relive stress and tension
  • Physical activities can provide a distraction
from the problems of daily life and can relieve
stress and tension caused by things like work,
    family and school.

14
4. To improve health
  • People who are physically fitter usually cope
    better when they become ill.
  • The ability to withstand and recover from illness
is related to fitness. Often, the fitter you are
the quicker you can recover from common illnesses
such as a cold or flu.

15
5. For Enjoyment
  • Most people who play a sport will be
    participating because they enjoy it.
  • Some might be forced to do it, others might be
highly competitive and some because they know its
    good for them.

16
Task
  • Discuss with a partner what the following terms
    mean
  • Cooperation
  • Competition
  • A physical challenge
  • Aesthetic appreciation
  • Social mixing
  • Extension Try and make a sentence on why we
participate in physical activity which includes
    the words above.

17
Cooperation
  • Team games in particular help improve teamwork
and cooperation. These skills are essential in
everyday life. Encouragement and support are
fundamentals in performing well as a team.

Competition
  • Competition is often a part of sport/activities.
This can be in terms of psychologically
preparing for an game/race and in terms of
concentrating on doing well in that activity.

18
A physical challenge
  • Often termed a physical challenge when in the
early stages the task seems like an
impossibility. Mental strength is also essential
if you are to achieve the physical challenge. An
    example is the London Marathon.

Aesthetic appreciation
  • We have an aesthetic appreciation when we take
part in or watch moments in sport which are
    beautiful. YOUTUBE CLIP
  • It is often the observer not performer who
appreciates the action/event but often the
performer will know when the action feels
right. The term aesthetic appreciation is
usually, but not exclusively, associated with
    dance, diving or gymnastics .

19
Development of Friendship and Social Mixing
  • Think of all of the people you mix with when you
    take part in a sport
  • Coaches
  • Trainers
  • Physiotherapists
  • Teachers
  • Team-mates
  • Officials
  • Volunteers
  • Training alone can be lonely and requires lots of
self motivation. Most activities do have a
social side and friendships can developed.

20
Homework 1
  • READING page 8-17 to fully understand the
    content of todays lesson.
  • You need to create 3 scenarios as to why somebody
your age might not take part in physical
    activity.
  • e.g. I have recently received a lot of homework
so I find it hard to find enough time to
    participate in exercise.
  • Then give a detailed explanation of how you would
overcome this problem and give the social,
mental and physical benefits of exercise in each
    answer.
  • Extension task Research the differences in
activity levels for teens in the UK in the 1980s
    compared to today.

21
Plenary
  • Watch the following clips and give a social,
mental and physical benefit of that activity
