Aim and objectives
  • AIMTo strive for the socio-economic empowerment
    of poor women and girl children of the families
    living below poverty line by improving their
    existing conditions through their organization
    into self-help groups.
  • Objectives-
  • To awaken women about their rights through
    sensitivity training Programmes and community
    participation.
  • To promote sustainable and viable economic
    enterprises of women for their economic
    independence
  • To develop livelihood and income generating
    opportunities for women like, fisheries,
    dairying, agriculture, live stock management,
    vegetable cultivation, vending etc
  • To take up immunization and family welfare
    programme for women and girl children.
  • To improve community level preparedness and
    capacity to respond in flood emergencies.
  • To impart non-formal education to girl children
    women to bring them into the mainstream of
    education.
  • To eradicate social evils affecting women and
    girl children, through awareness and community
    organization.
  • To mobilize the community against the atrocities
    against women.

Sakhi work on fisheries
  • SAKHI has been instrumental in getting 13 block
    level fisherwomens cooperative societies
    registered under the 1996 amended Government of
    Bihar Cooperative Act 1935. The 1996 amendment
    ensures greater autonomy and access to womens
    cooperatives.
  • 5000 fisherwomen in Madhubani District have been
    made technically proficient in carrying out
    fisheries related operations.
  • Women from marginalized communities have been
    organized into 2000 SHGs.
  • Arranged exposure visit for the women members of
    the cooperative to Kakinara, Kolkatta and many
    other places.
  • Pilot testing of many new variety of fish (Sea
    prawn, Mangur, Pangaseous, etc) in his demo pond.
  • Provide technical assistance to the fish farmers.
  • Support convergence of government schemes (117
    Machua Awas Yojna, technical training to fish
    farmers, etc)

Fishery group present status
  • At present 45 women fish farmer groups having
    membership of 615 is engaged in fish farming
    vending.
  • The members were of the group have taken 52
    ponds on lease having water area around 200 acre.
  • Members of the group taken 9 makhana pond on
    lease.

Challenges faced so far
  • Non supportive social setup for the women's.
  • Encroachment of the middlemen in fishery
    cooperative.
  • Lack of support of the line department.
  • Regular change of government policy.
  • Lack of capital.
  • Theft and poisoning.
  • Lack of technical knowledge.
  • Good quality fish seed.
  • Fish feed availability.
