Title: Seam Finishes II

1
Seam Finishes II
  • Gwishiri
  • Apparel I

2
Seam Finishes
  • There are five seam finishes we will talk about
    today
  • Topstitched Seam (page 548)
  • Double-Stitched Seam (page 548)
  • Flat felled Seam (page 547)
  • Bound Seam (page 575)
  • Overcast Seam

3
Topstitched Seam
  • Topstitching holds bulky seam allowances flat and
emphasizes the seam of a garment
  • Stitch a 5/8 standard seam
  • Press seams open
  • Topstitch along each side of the seam, through
both layers of fabric and equal distance

4
Double-Stitched Seam
  • This seam works well on curved seams, such as
    armhole or crotch seams
  • Stitch a 5/8 inch seam-right sides together
  • Stitch again about 1/8 inch from the seam line in
    the seam allowance
  • A narrow zigzag stitch may be used for this
second row (ONLY IF YOU DONT GO OVER THE FIRST
    SEAM!!!)
  • Trim the seam allowances close to the stitching

5
Flat Felled Seams
  • Find this sturdy and durable seam on shirts,
jeans, sportswear, pajamas, and other garments
  • Two rows of stitching show on the outside of the
    garment
  • Pin wrong sides together
  • Stitch 5/8 inch standard seam- press open
  • Press both seams to one side
  • Trim the underseam allowance to 1/8 inch
  • Fold in the edge of the upper seam allowance to ¼
    inch
  • Stitch close to the folded edge through all
    thicknesses.

6
Bound Seam Finish
  • Strips of bias tape or seam binding are folded
and sewn overthe raw edge of the seam allowance.
  • Use this to finish seams, especially ones that
    are going to be showing
  • Found usually on dress clothes
  • Sew 5/8 inch seam
  • Slip the binding over the raw edge with the wider
edge on the wrong side of the garment.
  • Machine stitch close to the edge of the binding

7
Overcast Seam Finish
  • This is a special machine stitch that looks like
a combination of straight and zigzag stitches
  • Its sewn close to or over the raw edge of the
    seam allowance
  • Sew 5/8 inch seam
  • Sew close to the edge of the seam allowance (look
    in manual for overcast stitch)
