  • B23 discussions

35
First names
  • In Germany business people prefer to be called by
their full title and even co-workers dont use
first names. Herr Dr Berger probably thought that
Hank Carter from the USA was disrespecting him.
  • Dr Berger should have explained this to Mr
Carter Oh by the way Mr Carter, in Germany I
think youll find that people prefer to be called
by their full title. Actually even co-workers
  • Mr Carter should have done his homework before
the meeting and adapted his behaviour Im very
sorry, Herr Doktor Berger, I didnt mean to upset
you. In my country we like to use first names to
    show we are being friendly

36
Hugs and kisses
  • In Korea (and many other parts of the world) it
is not usual for male business associates to hug
or kiss females even if they know them well. Jos
Garcia from Spain was showing his Korean
counterpart that he like her, but he went too
    far.
  • Joe Garcia shouldnt hug and kiss her. He should
just say Its really great to see you again
  • Hyun Kim Lee should try not to be embarrassed and
say afterwards oh, by the way Jos, in Korea
its not a good idea to

37
Silence
  • In the UK, silences during a meeting a considered
awkward and embarrassing, which is why Bill tried
to fill the silences. In Japan silence is an
integral part of a meeting and someone who talks
too much is considered to be empty-headed.
  • Bill should keep quiet
  • Mr Tanaka should be more tolerant.

38
Personal questions
  • In Taiwan it is considered friendly to ask
questions like these to help put you at your
ease. Don was embarrassed because in the USA
personal questions like these are not usually
asked until you know someone well. Many people in
Asia believe that ones blood type controls ones
    personality.
  • WJ Chang should ask Don about his journey and
other less personal things so, Don, what was
    your journey like?...
  • Don should try not to be embarrassed. He should
answer the questions yes, Ive been married for
10 years. We have two kids, a boy and a girl. Im
afraid I dont know my blood type its not the
sort of thing we know in the States.

39
Titles
  • In Australia people tend to be more egalitarian
than in Austria and set little store by titles.
They probably thought Mr Weiss was being
    pretentious.
  • Mr Weiss should announce himself as Hans Weiss.
  • Someone should tell him not to use his title in
Australia we dont use titles much, by the way.
And your title is rather hard to understand
    because theres no equivalent here

40
Time
  • Meetings usually start a little late in France
and they overrun at the end. In the USA meetings
tend to start and finish punctually. Monsieur
Leroi thought Tina was being rude and rejecting
    his hospitality.
  • He should apologize for being late (or try to
arrive on time). they should agree when the
meeting really finishes Im sorry Im so late.
The meeting is scheduled to end at 5pm, but is it
all right if we go on for another half hour if
    necessary?....
  • She should probably expect a French person to
arrive late. She shouldnt take umbrage because
she is kept waiting. If she really has to leave,
she should make this clear at the beginning
The meeting is scheduled to end at 5pm, and Im
afraid I really have to leave then because I have
    a plane to catch
