The Introductory Paragraph
  • Requires
  • a hook that grabs the readers attention
  • declarative statement
  • compelling quotation
  • anecdote
  • historical narrative
  • DO NOT USE
  • a rhetorical question
  • A dictionary definition

The Introductory Paragraph
  • A thesis statement an expression of opinion
    that can be supported using specific examples
  • A map of the major arguments of your essay (the
    distinct topics of each body paragraph)
  • A reference to the conclusion (optional)
  • An introductory paragraph would never have fewer
    than 4 sentences, and would ideally have at least
    5-7.

Body Paragraphs
  • Include
  • a transition to ease the flow from one paragraph
    to the next
  • a topic sentence one of the 3 major supporting
    arguments
  • each body paragraph needs its own specific
    argument or focus
  • a statement of opinion or transition (from
    general to specific)
  • At least 3 specific examples in support, or one
    extended, specific example.
  • You might try changing up the types of examples
    you use, to maintain interest and variety.

Analysis
  • After every piece of evidence, be sure and write
    at least one or two sentences explaining why you
    use it. You must tie your evidence to your
    argument this is analysis.

  • Your arguments must be organized. You should
    either progress from your weakest to your
    strongest argument, or vice-versa.

  • Re-introduces your thesis statement, but in a
    different format.
  • Briefly touch upon your major arguments. - Do
    not restate your arguments as they appeared in
    your body paragraphs!
  • Leave your reader with something to ponder, or
    with some action to take twist).
