Title: Chapter 1: Motion

1
Chapter 1 Motion
2
I. Frame of Reference
  • 1. The object or point from which movement is
    determined.
  • 2. The most common frame of reference is the
    Earth.
  • 3. The frame of reference is assumed to be
    stationary.

3
II. Motion
  • 1. A change in position in a certain amount of
time, which is relative to a given frame of
    reference.

4
  • 2. Units
  • Km/h Kilometers per hour
  • m/s meters per second
  • Speed Distance
  • Time

5
III. Speed
  • 1. On a distance time graph, the slope of the
line indicates the speed the steeper the
    slope, the faster the speed.
  • 2. Constant Speed Speed that does not change.
If slope is completely straight then the speed
    must be constant.
  • 3. Average Speed When the speed of a moving
    object is not always constant.
  • Average Speed Total Distance
  • Total Time

6
IV. Velocity Speed in a given direction.
  • 1. Velocities that have the same directions
    combine by addition.
  • Example Rowing downstream
  • 2. Velocities that have opposite directions
    combine by subtraction.
  • Example Rowing upstream
