Class Notes 3 Macromolecules
2
I. Macromolecules
  1. Macromolecules are really big molecules.
  2. There are 4 main types in living things
    carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic
acids and they are mostly made of the elements
    HONC.

3
II. Carbohydrates
  1. Carbohydrates are made of C, H, and O.
  2. Can be broken down to provide energy for cells.
  3. Major part of plant cells-cellulose.

III. Lipids- AKA fats oils
  1. Include fats, oils, and cholesterols.
  2. Can be used for energy or cell structure

Double bonds
Single bonds

IV. Proteins
  1. A protein is a polymer made of the monomers amino
    acids.
  2. Proteins help with digestion, movement, and even
    vision.

6
V. Nucleic Acids
  1. Contain the information cells use to build
    proteins from amino acids.
  2. Made of nucleotides that contain a sugar, a
    phosphate, and a nitrogen base.

Summary
  • What are macromolecules? What are the four
