Baal lord, owner, husband The most
prominent Canaanite deity. As the god of
fertility in the Canaanite pantheon (roster of
gods), Baals sphere of influence included
agriculture, animal husbandry, and human
sexuality. Baal worship became prominent in the
northern kingdom of Israel during the days of
King Ahab (ninth century bc) when he married
Jezebel of Tyre, a city in Phoenicia (1 Kgs
162933 181940). It later infiltrated the
kingdom of Judah when Athaliah, daughter of Ahab
and Jezebel, married King Jehoram of Judah (2 Kgs
81718, 2426). Places for worship of Baal were
often high places in the hills consisting of an
altar and a sacred tree, stone, or pillar (2 Kgs
235). The predominantly urban Phoenicians built
temples to Baal while Athaliah was queen of
Judah, even Jerusalem had one (2 Chr 231217).
The worship of Baal was strongly condemned in the
OT (Jgs 21214 378 Jer 19).

offered as sacrifices. That Molech is a deity,
not the name of a type of offering, is clearly
indicated by Lev. 205. Children were dedicated
(passed over) and burned to Molech at the
Tophet in the Valley of Hinnom near Jerusalem.
This practice with Molech specifically mentioned
is found in only four passages (Lev. 1821
202-5 2 Kings 2310 Jer. 3235). This type of
offering without mention of Molech is found
abundantly elsewhere (Deut 1231 1810 2 Kings
163 1717, 31 216 Jer. 731 195 Ezek.
1621 2026, 31 2337 2 Chron. 288 336).
