Land Use
2
Urban vs. Rural
  • Urban
  • Covered with buildings and roads
  • Rural
  • Large areas of open space with few people
  • Most land provides one or more resources that
people use! Until 1850 most people lived in rural
areas. Movement of people to urban areas happened
from 1880-1950 due to the Industrial Revolution.

3
Urban vs. Rural
  • Ecosystem Services Johnston Co.
    census Raleigh Census
  • Rural areas produce the resources that urban
    areas require.
  • No rural areas NO resources for ANYONE!

4
Urban Crisis
  • The movement of people from rural areas to urban
    areas is known as urbanization.
  • When urban areas grow too fast, they run in to
    trouble.
  • Name some issues
  • Urban Sprawl
  • Rapid expansion of a city into the countryside
    around the city.

5
Heat Islands
  • Cities generate and trap heat
  • The increased temperature in the city is called a
    heat island.
  • Roads and buildings absorb and retain more heat
    than vegetation
  • Affects weather patterns.
  • Causes hot air to rise, creating rain clouds and
    producing more rain!
  • Can be moderated by planting trees and installing
    reflective rooftops.

6
Farmlands
  • Land used to grow crops and fruit
  • Threatened by urban development
  • US Government established a national Farmland
Protection Program to help state, county, and
    local governments protect farmland

7
Rangelands
  • Grasslands, shrublands and deserts
  • Not used for farming or timber production!
  • Most commonly used for grazing of livestock
  • Overgrazing
  • Allowing more animals to graze in an area than
    the range can support
  • Vegetation can be replaced with less desirable
species or can disappear all together!

8
Forest Lands
  • Trees are harvested to provide products we use
    everyday.
  • Paper, Furniture, Lumber, Plywood, Maple Syrup,
    Turpentine etc.
  • Clear cutting
  • Removing ALL trees
  • Destroys habitats, causes erosion
  • Selective Cutting
  • Cutting and removing on middle aged to mature
    trees
  • More expensive, less destructive

9
Forest Lands
  • Deforestation
  • Clearing trees without replacing them
  • Destroys habitats, causes erosion, natural
    resources depleted
  • Highest rates in Tropical Rain Forests
  • Reforestation
  • Trees are planted to re-establish trees that have
    been cut down

10
Parks and Preserves
  • Land set aside for public use and enjoyment
  • Various uses hunting, fishing, hiking, camping
  • Protects habitats of endangered species
  • Affected by pollution urban sprawl
  • US has about 50 national parks and YOU share in
    the ownership!
  • Yellowstone was the 1st created

11
In what ways is your life affected by forest?
  • Create a word list of as many things as possible
that you can think of that forests provide.
