Title: Cognitive Linguistics Croft

1
Cognitive Linguistics Croft Cruse 8 (8.3.5
through end)
  • Metaphor

2
8.4 Metaphor and simile
  • Basically, metaphor and simile are two names for
what is conceptually one thing the author
insists that they are actually distinct, but I
think that most people are not in agreement with
    him

3
8.5 Metaphor and metonymy
  • The characterization of metonymy here is rather
impenetrable. Perhaps we are better off with
Geeraerts ppt, or with just the examples
    (part-whole, individual-class, etc.)
  • Metaphor and metonymy are part of a continuum
according to Radden, but Cruse suggests that they
    are always distinct
  • MORE IS UP is an example of a metonymy that
    supports a metaphor
