Title: YOUTH GOALKEEPER LICENCE

1
YOUTH GOALKEEPER LICENCE PLANNING A TRAINING
PROGRAM. MODULE 4
2
Session Planning
A modern, effective goalkeeper training program
must by more than busy work. Advanced youth
players and adults need a focused, varied,
goalkeeper-specific program.
  • An important prerequisite for being a goalkeeper
    falls under the headings of.
  • Technique,
  • Condition,
  • Game awareness
  • Psychology.

3
Session Planning
  • Technique
  • Catching balls on the ground and in the air
  • Punching the ball out
  • Jumping, diving and landing
  • Saving balls kicked by attackers
  • Throwing, drop-kicking, volleying
    (distribution, attack building).

4
Session Planning
  • Condition..
  • Mobility/agility
  • Speed (action/reaction speed)
  • Basic endurance
  • Jumping power
  • Well developed muscles

5
Session Planning
  • Game Awareness
  • Positional play on shots from various positions
    and distances.
  • Positional play on crosses and passes in front
    of the goal
  • Positional play on set plays
  • Acting as director of the defence
  • Acting as first defender

6
Session Planning
  • Psychology............
  • Motivation and positive attitude
  • Willingness to get involved
  • Power of concentration
  • Courage /willingness to take risk
  • Assertiveness
  • Self-confidence

7
Goalkeeper training in a team context
Advantages for session planning
Game-orientated goalkeeper training
  • Effectively combines individual goalkeeper
training concept with field player training
  • Goalkeepers arent left on the side-lines
  • Promotes an understanding of the game
  • Develop and teaches a technical-tactical
arsenal in a game orientated way.

Game-orientated field player training
Psychological effect
  • Develop and teaches individual
    technical-tactical elements (scoring, 1 v 1,
    combination play, long distance shooting,
accurate passing) in a game orientated way.
  • Demands lots of concentration from both
    goalkeepers and field players
  • Promotes harmony and a sens of unity

8
Session Planning
ASSESSMENT AND ALLOCATION OF GROUPS
  • Method.
  • Initially by age grouping.
  • Ages 9/12, 12/15, 15 and over plus combined
    elite groups
  • All players should be assessed in an initial
group session and then paired with a player of
the same height and ability where possible.
  • This may mean training a base group and an elite
group in the same age especially in the 12 years
    and older groups.
  • Assessment of ability should be made on physical
and technical ability as well as noting how
receptive the player is to coaching.
  • If a player of a younger age group is obviously
superior to other players in his group they
should be moved up to the next age group for a
session and then permanently if they cope well
with the speed and power of the older group.

Session Planning
TIPS FOR SESSION PLANNING
  • Sessions should be planned so all aspects of
coaching are covered within a time frame on a
    regular basis.
  • Regular testing will highlight problem areas and
allow the program to be adjusted to improve
weaknesses while still consolidating the strong
    areas of play,
  • Young players are receptive to a controlled fun
environment with a variety of exercises and
    competition between pairs or groups.
  • Players should be kept active and coaches should
organize sessions so players are not waiting
their turn to complete a drill or exercise.
  • The physical, technical and tactical areas can
all be integrated into sessions with points being
made on the psychological areas when the
    opportunity arises. .

10
Session Planning
HOW LONG..HOW OFTEN
11
Technique Observation
Using component cards coaches can break down the
technique and analyse which components are the
problem areas and coach them specifically rather
than coaching the technique as a whole.
12
Technique Observation
  • LETS LOOK AT THE TECHNIQUE OF KEEPERS FACING
    CORNERS
  • They have to assess and make decisions under
pressure quickly and with authority and should
understand all the components of the technique.
  • The break up of components for corner and crosses
    is
  • POSITION OF KEEPER
  • POSITION OF TEAMATES
  • CONSIDERATION OF WEATHER
  • SIGHTING OF CORNER KICKERS POSITION
  • SIGHTING BALL OFF THE BOOT
  • DECISION ON IF IT IS KEEPERS BALL
  • SELECT RUN
  • CALL INTENTION
  • DECISION TO CATCH, PUNCH OR DEFLECT
  • COMPLETE TECHNIQUE
  • SIGHT TEAM SHAPE AND AVAILABLE OPTIONS
  • DISTRIBUTE BALL

Each component can now be broken down, analysed
and corrected. Another useful aid could be a
Fault finding graph

Routine Move off line and encourage constructive
talking and direction of play
14
Building Technique Competence
  • To lift the player to the next level, increase
the power and speed of distribution to the
    player.
  • To increase players upper body strength stand
further away from the player when distributing
forcing the player to throw further.
  • To improve concentration spans extend all
routines making sure that percentage level is
    retained.
  • Players will subconsciously find ways of
shortcutting the routines, watch for this and
ensure that their basic technique is performed
    properly.
  • Work within the players capabilities building
fitness slowly as if they overtire physically
their technique will drop off and their
confidence level will also drop as a result.
