There are a vast of tribes in Africa!

Surma father with his children in Ethiopia
(Eastern Africa).
19
Ndebele tribe in South Africa.
  • On her legs, the young child wears beaded hoops
called golwani. On her waist there are matching
hoops which are called lighabi. Lighabi are worn
by both sexes but are usually found on girls. As
the child grows, the lighabi is replaced by
larger versions, and is finally discarded after
    her initiation into womanhood.

20
Himba mother and child, taken in Namibia
(southern Africa).
  • The Himba baby wears a leather necklace which is
supposed to keep away evil spirits. Also for
beauty and protection the child and mother are
covered with a mixture of red ocher from the
earth and animal fat when the child is only a few
    days old.

21
Surma Girl, in Ethiopia
  • The Surma girl is watching a stick fight to see
who her husband will be. In this tribe the
decision of whom they will marry is made by the
women. In most cases it is which ever made wins
    the stick fight.

22
The Krobo Tribe of Ghana
  • The Krobo tribe holds a ceremony for girls
entering womanhood. During the ceremony the women
are presented to the community including future
    husbands, family the chief.

23
  • This picture is from the same ceremony as the
last. The girls celebrate three stages in their
ceremony. At the end of the first week the girls
put on Dipo-pe straw hats and perform a klama
    dance.

Lip Plates
  • To explain the picture before, Lip Plates are
very common in many African tribes. At a very
young age children would have these plates,
which are made out of bone, inserted into their
bottom lip to create a large gap. They keep this
in until they gap is as large as they desire and
then they change the plates every so often. Once
these plates are inserted, the lip cannot ever be
shrunken back to its normal size. These plates
can range from any shape and size

This is a picture of a Surma woman with her lip
plate taken out.
27
Turkana
  • The women in this picture is a Turkana single
woman. Her tribe is located in Kenya. The Turkana
men believe that, "It's the things a woman wears
that make her beautiful." A multi layered beaded
necklace with three back pendants indicates this
    girl's availability for marriage.
