Native Americans
  • Native Americans were displaced as more Americans
    settled west of the Appalachians.
  • Chief Little Turtle, of the Miami Confederacy,
    defeated a group of soldiers to secure the Ohio
    Valley area.
  • 1794, American troops led by General Anthony
    Wayne, defeated the Native Americans at the
    Battle of Fallen Timbers.
  • The Treaty of Greenville was signed promising as
    annual payment to the Native Americans in the
    amount of 10,000. The agreement was not kept,
    but the Native loss
  • Battle of Fallen Timbers significant because it
    opened Northwest Territory to settlement.

  • While the British were helping the Native
    Americans take a stand against the United States,
    the new nation struggled to chart a sure course
    in the area of foreign policy.
  • 1789 Americans welcomed news of the French
    Revolution.

    for Americans and they declared war with Europe
    and Great Britain.
  • Americans were divided along party lines.
  • Democratic Republicans preferred the French
    Republic to its monarchial foes
  • Federalists stated the French Revolution was
    bloody out to destroy religion and social order

  • By 1793 Britain and France were at war.
  • America issued a proclamation of neutrality
    because they feared they were too weak to become
    involved. Also, feared the lose of trade with
    Britain.
  • 1793, Washington formally issued the Proclamation
    of Neutrality.
  • Britain tested the neutrality by seizing American
    ship trading with French colonies

  • To void war with Britain, Washington sent
  • Chief Justice John Jay London to negotiate a
    treaty to end British impressments of American
    ships.
  • Jay's Treaty of 1794 Instead of agreeing to
    stop impressments, the treaty secured the
    evacuation of British from forts in the Great
    Lakes region.
  • America also agreed to repay war debts to
    Britain.
  • Not seen favorably in the United States.

  • The United States also signed a treaty with
    Spain.
  • American needed ship their goods east traveling
    down the Mississippi River to New Orleans.
  • Problem Spain controlled the Mississippi River
    to New Orleans.

  • Thomas Pinckney was sent to Spain in 1795 to
    negotiate a treaty that would allow right of
    navigation of the Mississippi River and the right
    of deposit at New Orleans. Also established the
    northern boundary of Spanish Florida
  • Became known as Pinckney's Treaty (AKA Treaty of
    San Lorenzo).
  • United States viewed the treaty favorably.
  • By 1800 400,000 Americans lived beyond the
    Appalachian Mountains.
