  • Everyone experiences loss of memory from time to
    time.

3
  • Your sure you have seen her but you just cant
    place her
  • Who is that girl???

4
  • Some faces we could never forget

5
  • You have the word on the tip of your tongue
    but.
  • You just cant remember!!

6
  • When info that once entered long term
  • memory cannot be retrieved it is said to be
  • forgotten.

7
  • Some Inputs may fade away or decay, over time.
  • In Sensory and Short Term Memory items quickly
    decay..But
  • We are still not sure if Long Term memory ever
    decays

8
  • We know that a blow to the head can cause memory
    loss

9
  • We know that the memories lost are the most
recent ones however, the older memories seem to
    remain.
  • The fact that apparently forgotten information
can be recovered through meditation , hypnosis,
or brain stimulation suggests at least some
    memories never decay.

10
  • Rather, Interference or repression causes
people to lose track of them.

11
Interference
  • Interference refers to a memory being blocked or
erased by previous or subsequent memories.
  • Proactive interference- When an earlier memory
    does the blocking
  • Retroactive interference- When a later memory
    does the blocking

12
EXAMPLE
  • You move into a new home get a new address and
    phone
  • You have trouble remembering them because the
memory of the old Address and Phone get in the
    way (proactive)
  • Later, you know the info but have difficulty
    remembering the old data. (retroactive
    interference)

13
According to Sigmund Freud
  • Sometimes clocking is no accident.
  • A person may subconsciously block memories of an
    embarrassing or frightening experience.
  • This kind of forgetting is called ..

14
Repression
  • The Material still exists in the persons memory
but it has been made inaccessible because it is
    so disturbing.
