Frisbee History
  • 1920s Yale students discover the fun of throwing
    pie tins from the Frisbie Baking Company of
    Bridgeport, CT
  • 1948 Fred Morrison, California carpenter and
    building inspector, manufactures the first
    plastic flying disc.
  • 1957 WHAM-O introduces the Pluto Platter, a
    flying plastic disc.
  • 1958 WHAM-O modifies its plastic flying disc and
    trademarks the name FRISBEE for its flying disc

  • 1969 Ultimate, another FRISBEE disc sport, is
    invented by Columbia High School students in
    Maplewood, NJ.
  • 1994 Anni Kreml of San Francisco breaks
    the women's distance world record with a throw of
    136.31 meters (447.2 feet) on August 20 during
    the 1994 U.S. Open Flyng Disc Championships in
    Fort Collins, CO.
  • 1998 Scott Stokely of Fort Collins, CO sets
    the men's distance world record at 211.32 meters
    (693.3 feet).

Ultimate Frisbee Rules
  • The Field -- A rectangular shape with endzones at
    each end. A regulation field is 70 yards by 40
    yards, with endzones 25 yards deep.
  • Initiate Play -- Each point begins with both
    teams lining up on the front of their respective
    endzone line. The defense throws ("pulls") the
    disc to the offense. A regulation game has seven
    players per team.
  • Scoring -- Each time the offense completes a pass
    in the defense's endzone, the offense scores a
    point. Play is initiated after each score.

  • Movement of the Disc -- The disc may be advanced
    in any direction by completing a pass to a
    teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The
    person with the disc ("thrower") has ten seconds
    to throw the disc. The defender guarding the
    thrower ("marker") counts out the stall count.
  • Change of possession -- When a pass in not
    completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block,
    interception), the defense immediately takes
    possession of the disc and becomes the offense.
  • Substitutions -- Players not in the game may
    replace players in the game after a score and
    during an injury timeout.

  • Non-contact -- No physical contact is allowed
    between players. Picks and screens are also
    prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.
  • Fouls -- When a player initiates contact on
    another player a foul occurs. When a foul
    disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the
    possession was retained. If the player committing
    the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play
    is redone.
  • Self-Refereeing -- Players are responsible for
    their own foul and line calls. Players resolve
    their own disputes.

  • Spirit of the Game -- Ultimate stresses
    sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is
    encouraged, but never at the expense of respect
    between players, adherence to the rules, and the
    basic joy of play.

Disc Golf Etiquette
  • Pace of play Keep up with the group ahead of
    you. There should be no more than a half a hole
    open at a time.
  • Wait your turn The player furthest from the
    hole is the first to play. From the Tee Box the
    student with the lowest score on the previous
    hole will start.
  • Dont distract other players,
  • rather encourage them.
  • Keep your own score.

Disc Golf Rules
  • The object of the game is to complete each hole
    in the fewest number of throws. To begin, the
    disc is thrown from the tee area toward the
    target. As a player progresses down the fairway,
    he or she must make each consecutive shot from
    the spot where the previous throw has landed.

  • The trees, shrubs, and terrain changes located in
    and around the fairways provide challenging
    obstacles for the golfer. When you have hit the
    target you will count the total number of throws,
    plus any penalties, and proceed to the next hole.
    At the end of the course, the player with the
    fewest total throws is the winner.

Disc Golf Rules
  • OUT-OF-BOUNDS all paved areas and beyond
    (example your shot lands on pavement or crosses
    pavement and lands in area beyond). Out-of-bounds
    violations require a one-stroke penalty. Player
    throws from spot where disc entered out-of-bounds
    area.
