Three Types of Irony
  • Situational
  • Verbal
  • Dramatic

9
Situational Irony
  • expectations aroused by a situation are reversed
  • the contrast between what happens and what was
expected. The irony of a situation is often
humorous, such as when a prank backfires on the
    prankster.
  • Example It is the equivalent of a person
spraying shaving cream in his own face when he
was trying to spray his best friend.

Verbal Irony
  • The contrast between what is said and what is
    meant.
  • Verbal irony is often sarcastic.
  • Example 1 the person who says, Nice going,
Einstein, isnt really paying anyone a
    compliment.

14
Hamlet
  • Example 2 Hamlet tells Claudius, I am too much
in the sun. (Hamlet is ironically punning on
sun and son he is unhappy that Claudius is
his new step father so soon after his father
    died).

15
Dramatic Irony
  • The contrast between what the character thinks to
be true and what we (the audience) know to be
true. This form of irony creates suspense.
  • Example 1 when the killer is hiding in the
basement, but the hero of the movie does not know
that. The irony is that the hero thinks he is
safe, when you know he is in danger. Again, there
    is an element of contrast.

16
Oedipus
He blinds himself when he sees the truth! The
audience knows the truth about Oedipus the
entire play.
