• The Roman Catholic Church reacted to the
  Protestant Reformation by making limited reforms.
• The Catholic Counter Reformation was a movement
  within the Roman Catholic Church to stop the
  spread of Protestantism.

Council of Trent

• Between 1545 and 1563, officials of the Roman
  Catholic Church met at the Council of Trent.
• At this meeting, Church officials redefined
  Catholic beliefs and created strategies to stop
  the spread of Protestantism.

indulgences.

The Inquisition

• The Roman Catholic Church created courts to
  punish people suspected of Protestant beliefs in
  Catholic countries.
• This movement was known as the Inquisition.
• The Inquisition punished heresy or the acceptance
  of non-Catholic beliefs.

• Ignatius Loyola started a new Catholic order
  called the Jesuits in 1534.
• The Jesuits were dedicated to defending the
  Catholic faith.
• The Jesuits also wanted to spread the Catholic
