Direct Instruction
  • What is it?
  • Teaching strategy which is teacher centered and
    involves lots of information being transmitted to
    the students. Typically known as a lecture.

  • Direct instruction is like a good speech
  • the teacher must catch students interest at the
    beginning, hold it by delivering pertinent
    organized information, involve listeners (overtly
    or covertly) and STOP before they reach
    saturation.

  • Be well organized
  • Juggle direct instruction with other teaching
    strategies
  • Show enthusiasm, interest in the topic
  • Include lots of examples, illustrations,
    analogies, visuals
  • Make all your students feel personally spoken to

  • Dont read from notes

  • Do not overuse direct instruction
  • Make your direct instruction as interactive as
    possible
  • Students typically fade out of non-interactive
    lectures.
