Emancipation Proclamation

• Lincoln believed he could save the Union by
  broadening his goals.
• He decided to emancipate, or free, enslaved
  African Americans living in the Confederacy.

Reasons to Emancipate

• More than 3 million slaves working for
  Confederacy.
• Major impact on war effort (nurses, cooks,
  laborers)
• Emancipation would weaken Confederacy
• Concerned about timing, Lincoln waited for Union
  victory to announce his proclamation.

Battle of Shiloh

• Abraham Lincoln appoints Ulysses S. Grant as
  General.
• Known as a tough, no-nonsense soldier.
• Northern victory in bloody two day battle.
• North loses 13,000 troops.
• South loses 10, 000 troops.
