Title: Power

Power
2
Stationary Power
  • Canadians use about 2 000 000 000 000 000 000 J
    of electrical energy each year!
  • Most of Canadas electrical energy comes from
harnessing rapidly flowing rivers, burning fossil
fuels, and splitting atoms to release nuclear
    energy.

3
Energy from Flowing Rivers
  • Hydro-electric plants produce most of the
    electrical energy used in Canada.
  • Hydro-electric plants use water pressure to
    generate electrical energy.

4
Energy from Fossil Fuels
  • Coal, crude oil, and natural gas are products of
    once living tissues.
  • Tremendous pressure and heat converted these
decaying tissues into the materials we call
    fossil fuels.
  • Burning fossil fuels produces large amounts of
carbon dioxide gas, one of the biggest
    contributors to pollution.

5
Energy from Splitting Atoms
  • During the process of nuclear fission a
tremendous amount of energy is released (along
    with excess neutrons).
  • The process of generating electrical energy
through nuclear fission is called thermonuclear
    electrical generation.

6
Canadas Energy Resources
  • Over 98 of Canadas electrical energy is
    produced by hydro-electric, thermoelectric or
    thermonuclear plants.

7
Delivering Energy to the Consumer
  • Power plants are generally located great
distances away from cities and communities in
    which they serve.
  • Consequently energy must be transmitted over many
    kilometers of power lines.

8
Changing the Voltage
  • Electrical transformers are devices that can
increase or decrease the potential difference for
    power lines.
  • Use the diagram on page 400 in the text book to
    fill in your diagram.

Electrical Energy and the Environment
16
Effects of Hydroelectric Plants
  • Hydroelectric plants appear to be the cleanest of
    the top 3 producers.
  • There are no smokestacks, they use no radioactive
    material.
  • But

17
  • Reservoirs flood many acres of valuable land.
  • When lands are flooded, the submerged vegetation
decays and uses up the oxygen supply in the
water, making it impossible for fish species to
    survive.

18
Effects of Fossil Fuels
  • Open pit mining leaves land destroyed and
    unproductive.
  • Underground mining produces waste that can seep
    into water supplies.
  • Burning fossil fuels produces acid rain and an
abundance of carbon dioxide, the main
    contributing gas to global warming.

19
Effects of Nuclear Energy
  • The radioactive materials used can damage living
    tissues.
  • If a nuclear reactor breaks down there is the
potential for immediate and very serious damage
    to people, animals and property.

20
Alternate Sources
21
Types of Alternate Energy
  • Solar Energy Energy from the sun using solar
    panals.
  • Wind Energy Energy from windmills
  • Tidal Energy Using the difference in high and
    low tide to generate electricity.
