Bible Study

  • I Am who I Am

6
Exodus 31-14
  • What does this passage tell us about God?
  • (2) In what way does Moses show respect and awe
    in the presence of God?
  • (3) How does God identify Himself in Exodus 314?

7
hayah
  • I AM
  • Hayah is part descriptive verb, part
definition, and part name. In the passage, it is
clearly being used as Gods name. This is not
uncommon. Many of the 3500 times hayah is used in
the Old Testament, the verb is both noun and name.

8
hayah
  • I AM
  •  The basis of Yahwehs name is hayah, a verb
which means to exist, to be, and to become. By
using hayah as the basis of His name, God is
telling us that He exists, that He is infinite in
the dimension of time. Hayah also defines
Yahwehs prophetic nature because hayah means to
make happen and to come to pass.

9
hayah
  • If we were to dissect hayah we would find that,
ha means behold and Yah is a shortened form
of Gods namethus Behold Yahweh. Behold has a
powerful connotation. It tells us to look at,
observe, consider and regard Yahweh for we are
beholden to Him. The shortened form of Yahwehs
nameYahis used in Exodus, Psalms, and Isaiah.
It is found most commonly in HalleluyahPraise
    Yah!

10
Exodus 31-14
  • (4) Why do you suppose God chose to refer to
Himself as I AM WHO I AM?
  • (5) What does it mean to you for God to be called
    I AM?

Worksheet 1-D
  • Take a few minutes and allow yourself to think
about your life during the five Stages of Life
    suggested below.
  • Briefly consider who were the major influences in
your life, where you lived, what you liked to
wear, what your parents looked like, etc. Then
turn your attention to how you viewed God during
those stages, and draw a picture that best
    captures the image.

12
Worksheet 1-D
  • If you hate to draw, you may want to go with a
stick figure and a written description.
  • When youve finished with the five drawings, take
a moment to close your eyes before God and ask
him to draw across your imagination how He would
like to be seen by you.
