Polymers of ethene (vinyl) monomers are called
plastics. In some cases, the vinyl monomers
have substituted groups.

Properties of Plastics
1. Chemically unreactive.
The CC bonds of the monomers have been
transformed into less reactive C-C bonds.
2. Generally flexible moldable.
The forces of attraction between polymer
chains are weak London forces.

Crosslinking
styrene monomer (vinyl benzene)

cross-linked polystyrene
Since the links between the polymer chains are
covalent bonds (which are much stronger than
London forces) crosslinked polymers are
strong materials. The greater the degree of
crosslinking, the stronger the polymer.

Thermoplastics
Plastics that are NOT crosslinked. Therefore,
they soften when heated and take on a new shape
upon cooling because they are held together only
by the weak London forces.
Thermoset Polymers
Plastics that ARE crosslinked. Therefore, they
are not softened by heat because their polymer
chains are linked together by strong covalent
bonds.
