Title: Recommendations Emerging from PRA1 Discussion (Diurnal and Mesoscale Variability)

Recommendations Emerging from PRA1
Discussion(Diurnal and Mesoscale Variability)
  • Precipitation in LPB comes mainly from large MCSs
with intense convection, often related to
transients. In the SACZ region, this is less so,
and even less so in Amazonia
  • Diurnal cycle is a combination of the afternoon
peak in ordinary convection and the broad
    nocturnal peak in MCS rains
  • The 90-day SALLJEX period should be used for many
model experiments, and to be most useful this
requires reanalysis with all possible datasets
  • The expanded rainfall database for SALLJEX should
be used to help diagnose biases in the satellite
    rainfall algorithms
  • ---------------------------------
  • Enhanced datasets for LPB should be of 2
    distinct types
  • 1) enhanced data for long-term
    monitoring
  • 2) field program data for a limited time for
    targeted process studies
  • High priority needs exist for continuous PDFs
of rainfall rate, quantitative radar data, land
surface hydrologic data, and wind and
    thermodynamic data.
  • ( Include effects of ACC, notably
    deforestation and aerosols on precipitation
    processes-- efficiency, diurnal cycle, severe
    storms, ?)
