Title: II. Kingdom Protista

1
II. Kingdom Protista
  • All are eukaryotic.
  • All have cells with nuclei.
  • All live in moist environments.
  • Can be unicellular or multicellular.
  • Can be microscopic or over 100 meters (300 feet)
    long.
  • Some are heterotrophs, while others are
    autotrophs.

2
Protista that are classified to
Animal-like protista called protozoa
Plant-like protista called True-algae
3
Plant like Protista (True-algae)
  • Photosynthetic their nutrition is plant-like.
  • Almost all of them have chlorophyll a, most have
chlorophyll c, but only a few have chlorophyll b.
  • They also have a variety of carotenoids and other
    pigments

4
  • The most common are
  • Chlorophyta
  • Euglenophyta
  • Bacillariophyta (diatoms)
  • Phaeophyta
  • Rhodophyta.

5
Chlorophyta (Green algae)
  • chlorophyll main pigment.
  • Most live in fresh water, although some marine
    species exist.
  • Cell walls are composed of cellulose.
  • Green algae can be
  • unicellular colonial
    multicellular
  • e.g.
  • Chlamydomonas Volvox
    Spirogyra
