Mars

Origins of Mars
  • The Romans named Mars after the God of War,
Aries, due to its reddish hue(looked like blood).
  • Mars was discovered in 1659 by Christian Huygens

3
Facts
  • Mars on average is 143 million kilometers from
Earth and 227 million kilometers from the Sun
  • Mars has a diameter of 6794 km and a
    circumference of 21,344 km
  • Mars is a terrestrial planet
  • One year on Mars is 687 earth days.

4
Facts
  • On the northern pole of Mars, there is a giant
frozen pond, which is one of the contributing
factors of why people think life could have
    existed on Mars.
  • However, the atmosphere is composed of 95 carbon
dioxide and is less than 1 the density of Earths
    atmosphere.
  • Due to the lack of an atmosphere, Mars has
extremely cold temperatures that can reach -200 F.

Olympus Mons
  • Mars has the biggest volcano/mountain in our
    solar system, named Olympus Mons.
  • It stands 22 km high, which is roughly three
times the size of Mt. Everest.

7
Mars Moons
  • Mars has two small, asteroid-sized Moons Phobos
    and Deimos.
  • The larger mooon is Phobos and measures 22.7 km
    across.
  • Deimos, Mars other moon, only measures at 12.6
    km.
  • Scientists predict that within the next 50 years,
    Phobos will crash into mars.
