  • What is it?
  • It is a bitter state of indirect conflict that
    existed between the U.S. and the Soviet Union for
    more than four decades.
  • Occurred from 1946 (or earlier) to 1989
  • Why is it called a cold war?
  • Hot war is when there is actual fighting
  • The cold war there was no direct fighting between
    the U.S. and the Soviet Union

Quick Review of WWII
  • Hitler ignores Versailles Treaty and makes
    Germany a European power. Takes land! 1933-38
  • Non-Aggression Pact- Hitler and Stalin 1939
  • Declaration of War with Britain and France. 1939
  • German domination until Battle of Britain. 1941
  • Japan bombs Pearl Harbor. U.S. enters war?1941
  • Germany invades USSR. No 2nd Front! 1941
  • Africa-Italy-France (D-Day) 1942-1944
  • German collapse then on to Japan. 1945
  • Hiroshima and Nagasaki end it all. 1945

The Cold War
  • North Atlantic Charter- FDR / Churchill (Aug.
    1941) They outlined common principles in the
    national policies of their countries on which
    they base their hopes for a better future for the
    world. Post WWII. This included the idea for the
    development of the United Nations. Allied nations
    sign the charter including the Soviet Union.

The Cold War
  • Yalta Conference- (Feb. 1945) Meeting with
    Churchill, Stalin and FDR. They prepared for
    Germanys unconditional surrender and began plans
    for a post-war world. Stalin also agreed to
    permit free elections in Poland and Eastern
    Europe and to enter the Asian war against Japan.
    Stalin broke his promise of free elections in
    Eastern Europe and installed governments
    dominated by the Soviet Union.

  • Potsdam Conference- (July-August 1945) Stalin,
    Churchill (replaced by Attlee), Trumanmet in
    Potsdam, Germany, from, to negotiate terms for
    the end of WW II. Continued from Yalta. Divided
    Germany into four zones Controlled by the east
    and west. Pushed for the free elections in
    Western Europe. Shared secrets about the A-Bomb.
    Allies become enemies.

  • How did the Soviets cause the Cold War?
  • U.S. is upset that the Soviet Union Set up a
    non-aggression pact with Germany
  • Soviet Union wanted to spread communism (the U.S.
    disliked the communist idea)
  • The Soviets make satellite nations out of the
    countries on their western border
  • Nations that were subject to Soviet domination
    and serve as a buffer zone

  • How did the U.S. cause the Cold war?
  • After the Russian Revolution the U.S. would not
    recognize the communist government until 1933
  • The U.S. waited to open up a second front in
    Europe during WWII
  • U.S. asked Britain for help on the A-bomb and
    left the Soviets out
  • U.S. wants to spread the ideas of liberty,
    equality, and democracy

  • Two unofficial declarations of war
  • In February 1946 Stalin gives a speech where he
    predicted the ultimate triumph of communism over
    capitalism.
  • In March 1946 Winston Churchill gave a speech
    where he said that there was an Iron Curtain that
    has descended on Europe.

  • How does the U.S. fight the Cold War?
  • Containment, what is it?
  • The U.S. will resist any Soviet attempts to form
    Communist governments anywhere
  • Truman Doctrine, what is it?
  • The U.S. must help nations that are resisting
    conquest by armed minorities and help free people
    to stay free
  • How do they work together?
  • Containment set out the U.S. aim for the Cold War
    while the Truman Doctrine gave us justification
    for what we did
