What does it take for something to be considered
science?
  • Which of the following topics do you think are
    science?
  • Astronomy
  • Astrology
  • Religion
  • Zoology

3
Criteria for Science
  • The phenomenon must be
  • Consistent
  • Observable
  • Natural
  • Predictable
  • Testable
  • Tentative

4
Consistent
  • Experiment results and observations are the same
    every time
  • Ex The sun rises every morning and sets every
    evening

5
Observable
  • Event or evidence can be observed by the human
senses or extensions of senses (microscope,
    telescope etc.)
  • Ex You can see the sun rise and set every day.

6
Natural
  • A naturally-occurring mechanism is used to
    explain how/why something happens.
  • Ex The sun rises and sets due to the rotation of
    the earth on its axis.

7
Predictable
  • Accurate predictions and conclusions are based on
    natural causes
  • Ex I predict that the sun will rise tomorrow
morning because the earth has made another
    revolution.

8
Testable
  • Controlled experiments can be designed to test
the natural cause of the event

9
Tentative
  • Subject to change
  • Explanations of the cause of the event are
subject to change as new evidence is presented.

10
All 6 criteria must be present
  • If one is missing, it is not true science.
