Kublai Kahn
  • Kublai Kahn, the grandson of Ganghis Kahn,
conquered China and established the Yuan
    (yoo-AHN) Dynasty.
  • The Yuan Dynasty lasted only about 100 years, but
played an important role in China because it
united the country for the first time in 300
    years.

3
Mongol Rule in China
  • The Mongols faced a difficult task in ruling
China. Their culture was radically different
from Chinese culture, and they relied on the
Chinese to help administer the empire.
  • Despite these challenges, Kublai proved an able
leader. He reopened the Grand Canal, built a
    highway, improved trade, among others.

4
The End of Mongol Rule in China
  • In the 1300s, Chinese rebels attacked the
Mongols, weakening their rule in China.
  • Finally, in 1368, Chinese rebels overthrew the
Mongols and established the Ming Dynasty.
