Adding Rational Numbers (5-1)
  • How do you add fractions with unlike
    denominators?
  • To add fractions with unlike denominators
(different-sized parts), change the fractions to
equivalent fractions with the same denominators
(same-sized parts). Then, add the numerators
(number of parts). The denominators stay the
    same.
  • w ? Write equivalent fractions with ?
    a common denominator (notice
    each
fraction is multiplied by the other
    fractions denominator)
  • ? Add the numerators. ?

Adding Rational Numbers (5-1)
  • How do you change a mixed number into a decimal?
  • How do you add decimals?
  • To change a mixed number into its decimal form
    1. change the fraction to a decimal by dividing
the numerator by the denominator and add the
whole number to the decimal form of the fraction,
or 2. make the mixed number an improper fraction
and divide the numerator by the denominator
  • Example
  • To add decimals, line up the decimals. This will
ensure that youre adding the same place values.
  • Example Add 12.34 432.1 3.456
