His Birth
  • Martin Luther was born on Jan. 15, 1929 in
    Atlanta Georgia. His parents named him Michael
    Luther King, but he later changed his name to
    Martin Luther King.

Faith in the Family
  • Faith was always a big part of Martin Luther
    Kings life. His father and grandfather were both
    Baptist Minister.

Schooling
  • He was 15 when he graduated a segregated high
    school.
  • The King entered Morehouse College in Atlanta at
    the age of 16 where he would study medicine and
    law.
  • His senior year he made the decision to enter the
    ministry, as his father had urged

His Family
  • When He went to Boston, he met Coretta Scott, who
    was studying at the New England Conservatory of
    Music.
  • Later they married in 1953, and had four children

What motivated him?
  • What motivated him the most was after Rosa Parks
    sat in the front of the bus and got in trouble
    for it. Not only Martin Luther, but a lot of
    activist were struck by this event and it
    motivated them to do something.

Accomplishments
  • He was the leader of the first non-violent
    African American movement, in December 1955,
    attempting to overturn Jim Crow laws, which
    relegated African Americans and other minorities
    to the back of buses.
  • He was the author of the famous "Letter from a
    Birmingham Jail", written in 1963, to other
    preachers, to turn their indifference towards the
    civil rights movement and bring about a change of
    heart, so they could support his efforts and the
    efforts of the N.A.A.C.P.
  • He was the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace
    Prize in 1964, when he was 35 years old. He used
    the money from the prize to further civil rights
    causes.

His Death
  • On April 4, 1968, a shot rang out while Martin
    Luther King was on his balcony in Memphis, TN. A
    30 year activist for Black rights was now laying
    on his balcony dying.
