SIDE 2 Sources of Rights Responsibilities
CITIZENSHIP PYRAMID
13
Okay, so being a citizen means having rights and
responsibilities. Where do those rights and
responsibilities come from?
14
Rights and responsibilities come from
A. The President.
B. Police officers.
C. Different places, depending on the level of
citizenship.
D. Long documents nobody can read or understand.
15

SIDE 3 Rights!
CITIZENSHIP PYRAMID
27
Rights are
A. Things adults get to do.
B. Privileges the President has.
C. Electric bulbs that let you read in the dark.
D. A privilege or a claim to something.
28
What kind of rights do citizens have at each
level?
29
RIGHTS
You would need a pyramid the size of the ones in
EGYPT
to list all the rights citizens have at each
level. Lets just list a few examples
30
NATION
United States Constitution
Guarantees really BIG rights like freedom of
speech, the right to vote, and the right to a
jury trial in some kinds of cases.

State Constitution
Your state constitution might guarantee the right
to a free education or equal rights for men and
women.
State constitutions usually repeat many of the
rights listed in the U.S. Constitution. But often
they add more

SCHOOL
School Handbook
Hey! I dont see any rights in my school
handbook. All I see is stuff kids arent supposed
to do!
37
Sometimes rights
are the flip side of responsibilities.
Rights
38
So if the handbook says you cant do something
it is silently giving you the right to do
something else!
39
So school handbooks are usually the opposite of
the U.S. Constitution because they list
responsibilities instead of rights.
Try out some examples of how responsibilities can
silently tell you what your rights are!
40
Do not throw food in the lunch room is silently
saying you have the right to
Eat in the lunch room!
41
Students must be seated during athletic
activities is silently saying you have the right
to
Attend athletic activities!
42
No T-shirts with inappropriate slogans is
silently saying you have the right to
Wear appropriate T-shirts!

to watch TV and play video games.

SIDE 4 RESPONSIBILITIES!
48
Responsibilities are
A. Things adults have to do.
B. Unpleasant activities nobody wants to do.
C. Duties to other people, the government, or to
society.
D. Chores you do after school.
49
HOME
The adults in charge at home give you duties you
are only responsible for at home.
For example, you might have to sweep the floor,
get groceries or even wash the dog!

54
CITY
City charters often contain rules, kind of like a
school handbook.
Laws that apply only within a city are called
ordinances.
55
CITY
If a city ordinance tells you not to do
something...
then you know you have a responsibility not to
do that thing.
56
CITY
Even if the ordinance just says what the
punishment is
you can still figure out you have a
responsibility not to do that thing.

NATION
United States Constitution
The Constitution does not have a list of
responsibilities, but that doesnt mean there
arent any.
The Constitution creates a government that cant
work if people dont participate!
61
NATION
United States Constitution
Could you have a jury trial if everyone refused
to do jury duty?
Jury duty is a responsibility we have to others
and to the government.
62
NATION
United States Constitution
What would happen if NOBODY showed up to vote??
Voting is a responsibility we have to our society
and the government.
63
NATION
United States Constitution
?
What good is voting if you have no idea what
youre voting for?
Staying informed is a responsibility we have to
society.
64
NATION
United States Constitution
Sometimes rights and responsibilities clash!
What would happen if you yelled Fire! in a
crowded theater?
Responsibility for public safety comes before the
right to free speech!
