  Arthur
• Upon Arthurs death, Henry married her
• England married Spain for political/religious
  alliance
• Bore him 6 children, only 1 survived, Mary

DEVOUT CATHOLIC orPROTESTANT REFORMER?

• 1521 awarded the title Defender of the Faith by
  Pope Leo X for his written attacks against Martin
  Luther
• His personal and dynastic concerns got him into
  trouble with Rome and the Pope

• Henry became convinced that
• Catherine was too old to give birth to more
  children
• his marriage was cursed
• Referred to her as his Spanish Cow!

His Appeal to the Pope

• Henry wants a divorce and appeals to Pope Clement
  VII (Leo X was Clements Medici Cousin!)
• BIG PROBLEM-Charles V, Emperor of HRE, would not
  allow Clement to end his aunts marriage
• Henry became furious and dismissed Lord
  Chancellor Thomas Wolsey b/c he could not secure
  the divorce for Henry

THE ENGLISH PARLIAMENT

• 1529 Henry called Parliament into session
• The Reformation Parliament legalized Henrys
  divorce to Catherine
• Stated that no foreign ruler can interfere with
  the kings divorce or remarriage

WIFE 2Anne Boleyn

• 1533 Henry secretly married Anne
• Promptly excommunicated by the pope
• 1st child Elizabeth
• 2nd child a boy, stillborn
• She has delivered herself of her savior.

• Act of Supremacy the King, not the pope,
  declared the head of the Church of England
  (Anglican Church)
• The King could appoint bishops and priests
• Strengthened Henry VIIIs and Parliaments
  political power
• Est. of Anglican Church

ACT OF SUCCESSION

• 1534, declared Henrys and Annes children heir
  to the throne
• Stated marriage to Catherine of Aragon invalid
• Showed Parliaments strength in decision making
  for canon and common law

• Lord Chancellor overseer of the courts
• Good friend of Henry
• Devout Catholic
• Resigned because he refused to recognize the Act
  of Supremacy
• Sent to Tower and beheaded in 1535

• Imprisoned in the Tower of London

Trial and Death of Anne

• Placed on trial after accused of treason and
  incest with her brother (George Boleyn)
• Sentenced to death
• Beheaded by French swordsman in 1536

• Her good fortune-she outlives him!
• She married Thomas Seymour (childhood boyfriend)
• She had one child (Mary), but she died a few days
  later from puerperal fever!
