  • 1521 awarded the title Defender of the Faith by
    Pope Leo X for his written attacks against Martin
    Luther
  • His personal and dynastic concerns got him into
    trouble with Rome and the Pope

His Appeal to the Pope
  • Henry wants a divorce and appeals to Pope Clement
    VII (Leo X was Clements Medici Cousin!)
  • BIG PROBLEM-Charles V, Emperor of HRE, would not
    allow Clement to end his aunts marriage
  • Henry became furious and dismissed Lord
    Chancellor Thomas Wolsey b/c he could not secure
    the divorce for Henry

  • The Reformation Parliament legalized Henrys
    divorce to Catherine
  • Stated that no foreign ruler can interfere with
    the kings divorce or remarriage
