Title: Section 5 Infarction

1
Section 5 Infarction
  • Definition
  • An infarct is an area of ischemic necrosis
within a tissue or an organ, produced by
occlusion of either its arterial supply or its
    venous drainage.

2
Etiology and Pathogenesis
  • Occlusion of a major artery is most often the
result of atherosclerosis and its complications
    (thrombosis, and/or embolism).
  • Rarely, arterial spasm can be severe enough to
    cause arterial occlusion and infarction.

3
Classification of infarction
  • (1) White infarcts (anemic infarcts) occur in
situations where there is a single blood supply,
  • ? with arterial occlusion,
  • ? in solid tissue with a blood supply that
  • divides in a tree-like configuration.

Classification of infarction
  • (2) Red infarcts (hemorrhagic infarcts)
  • ? With venous occlusion
  • ? In loose tissues
  • ? In tissues with a double circulation
  • ? In tissues previously congested.
