Site History

• Originally owned by British Industrial Sands
• Commenced waste disposal operations in 1985
• Biffa took over site operations between 1988-1991
• In 1999 the site was grated a recycling license

Site Information

• Site effectively works off two licenses
• Intake of 90 inert and 10 biodegradable waste
• 800 tonnes enter per day
• 250 tonnes leave per day

Recycling Activities

• 10 active waste was limiting customers
• At present the site segregates wood and cardboard
• Any materials they can recycle are forwarded for
  recycling elsewhere

Landfill Gas Management

• Biodegradable wastes can generate landfill gas
  over time
• Landfill gas is 6535 Methane and Carbon
  Dioxide, and traces of organic gases
• Monitored monthly by a gas control system

Site Remediation

• The base and sides are naturally lined by
  sandstone
• A gas-venting layer around the perimeter of the
  site
• Boreholes monitor quality of water and gas
  mitigation
• The restoration involves progressive capping

Restoration

• Phase 1 and 2
• landscaping of areas that have reached capacity
• Phase 3
• restored area for use as two sports pitches and
  given to a school
• Phase 4 and 5
• Whole site restored for use as a nature reserve
  with public walk ways, car park and possible
  visitors center
