Parts of Speech Directions In your Grammar notes
packet, you MUST write down everything in RED,
and anything else that you feel you may need to
review for the exam.

  • Noun 5 Types
  • Person, place, thing, and IDEA
  • Common- begins with lower case letter. Ex. city
  • Proper- begins with capital letter. Ex. Detroit
  • Possessive-shows ownership Ex. Girls
  • Abstract- names an idea, a feeling, a quality,
    or a characteristic. Ex. beauty
  • Concrete- names a person, place, or thing that
    can be perceived by one or more senses. Ex. yogurt

  • Pronoun 6 Types
  • takes the place of a noun
  • Personal- refers to the one speaking
  • 1st person pronouns having to do with me ex.
    I, me
  • 2nd person pronouns having to do with you ex.
    You
  • 3rd person pronouns having to do with everyone
    else ex. He, she, they, them
  • Reflexive- refers to the subject of a sentence
    and functions as a complement/object of a
    preposition. (reflect back to self) ex. Myself,
    yourself, himself
  • Relative- introduces a subordinate/dependent
    clause. Ex. That, which, who, these, those

  • Pronoun (contd)
  • Interrogative- introduces a questions. Ex. Who,
    whom, which, what, whose
  • Demonstrative- Used to point out or show a
    specific person, place, thing, or idea. Ex. This,
    that, these, those
  • Indefinite- NOT definite! refers to one or more
    persons, places, ideas, or things that may or may
    not be specifically named. Ex. All, another,
    everything, neither, nobody, such, anyone, more

  • Adjective
  • A word that modifies (describes) a noun or
    pronoun. Ex. I have a green pen.
  • Tells which one? How many? What kind?
  • Articles a, an, the
  • Proper adjective proper noun used as an
    adjective (American flag)

  • Verb 3 Types
  • shows action or help to make a statement
  • Action-shows action. Ex. She wrote a note.
  • Linking- links 2 words together
  • Can be linking is, be, am, are, was, were, been,
    being, appear, become, feel, grow, look, remain,
    seem, smell, sound, stay, taste
  • (see notes- you dont need to these write down!)
  • Ex. English is fun. (Englishfun) The game is on
    Saturday. (action)
  • The flower smells pretty. (flowerpretty) The dog
    smells the flower. (action)

  • Verb (contd)
  • Helping-helps an action verb or linking verb
  • Can be helping is, be, am, are, was, were, been,
    being, will, would, can, could, shall, should,
    may, might, must, have, has, had, do does, did,
    ought
  • (see notes-dont need to write down!)
  • Ex. We have been taking notes all day. (Taking is
    action.)
  • Ex. She will be could without a jacket. (Be is
    linking.)

  • Adverb
  • modifies (describes) adjectives (really cute),
    verbs (extremely fast), and other adverbs (very
    easily)
  • Tells how? When? Where? To what extent?
  • The word not is always an adverb!!!!

  • Preposition
  • Shows relationship between a noun or pronoun and
    some other word in the sentence.
  • Ex. Across, after, against, around, at, before,
    below, between, by, during, except, for, from,
    in, of, off, on, over, since, through, to, under,
    until, with, according to, because of, instead
    of, etc.
  • Ex. We went to school. We went up the stairs.

  • Conjunction
  • Joins words, phrases, and clauses
  • 3 Types
  • Coordinating
  • FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)
  • Subordinating
  • Start dependent clauses (and therefore must be
    followed by subject and verb)
  • After, since, before, while, because, although,
    so that, if, when, whenever, as, even, though,
    until, unless, as if, etc.
  • Correlative
  • Not only/but also, neither/nor, either/or,
    both/and.

  • Interjection
  • words that express emotions
  • Example Wow! Yikes! Hey!
