The Technology
  • The American Civil war is often called the first
modern war. This is true partly because of the
new technologies of the 19th century. These new
devices made war more destructive and bloody than
at any time in mans history.

14
Tech. cont.
  • The new technologies were the product of what is
generally called the first industrial revolution.
These technologies were based on iron and steam
power. (The second industrial revolution would be
    based on steel and oil.)

15
The Railroads
  • This is the first railroad war (and, as in so
many other ways, a dress rehearsal for WW I).
RRs allowed for the mass movement of men and
supplies in a way that had never been possible.
Atlanta was a RR hub and thus a military target.
